The Kingdom Mind: From Jesus to Paul and the Implications for Mormonism

When Jesus proclaims the Kingdom of God and Paul announces the Lordship of Christ, that common vision intends the present realization of Israel’s ancient hope for a transfigured earth. They envisage a transformed world of non-violent distributive justice here below and a transformed world of justice and peace here and now. Their call is to a collaborative covenant, a participatory latter-day challenge, a transfiguration of the earth in which God does not act without us and we cannot act without God. Whence came such a startlingly counter-intuitive vision for our world and what are its implication for Mormonism—and everyone else as well?

About John Dominic Crossan: Widely regarded as the foremost historical Jesus scholar of our time, Crossan is the author of several bestselling books including The Historical Jesus; Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography; The Greatest Prayer; and The Power of Parable: How Fiction by Jesus Became Fiction about Jesus.

Crossan was born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1934 and educated in Ireland and the United States, receiving a doctorate of divinity from Maynooth College, Ireland in 1959. He did post-doctoral research at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome from 1959 to 1961 and at the École Biblique in Jerusalem from 1965 to 1967. He was a member of a Roman Catholic religious order, the Servites (Ordo Servorum Mariae), from 1950 to 1969 and an ordained priest from 1957 to 1969. He joined DePaul University, Chicago, in 1969 and remained there until 1995. He is now a professor emeritus in its department of religious studies.

He received awards for scholarly excellence from the American Academy of Religion in 1989, DePaul University in 1991 and 1995, as well as an honorary doctorate from Stetson University, DeLand, FL, in 2003.

He has written twenty-seven books on the historical Jesus, the apostle Paul, and earliest Christianity. His work has been translated into thirteen languages, including Polish, Hungarian, Russian, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

His most recent book is How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian: Struggling with Divine Violence from Genesis through Revelation (HarperOne, 2015).

Pillars of Our Faith; Faith in Action

The Fight to End Human Trafficking

Moderated by Katie Langston

Lacy Bentley is a Behavioral Science student at Utah Valley University. A survivor of exploitation as well as severe abuse and neglect as a child, she seeks to share a message of hope and healing. She is co-founder of an upcoming non-profit organization that can be found at www.achangeofheartfoundation.org. Focuses include recovery from self-destructive behaviors learned through exploitation and abuse; healing from the grips of loved one’s addictive behaviors; and the power of personal choice in building one’s own future. She is a candidate for the National Speakers Association, a Suicide Prevention Educator and volunteer for the Utah County Crisis line. She has worked with women in self destructive addictive behaviors since 2000, has led assemblies for young women on the dangers of eating disorders, has instructed coaches, school nurses and counselors around addressing eating disorders in students, and has been a participant, sponsor, facilitator and founder in numerous 12-step programs.

A twenty-one year sober alcoholic with 15 years sobriety from anorexia, the messages she offers are of personal experience with choice in recovery. This choice has expanded to her recovery from sexually addictive behaviors and beliefs, which she seeks to share through messages of healthy sexual connection to God, self and others.

A dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lacy believes firmly in the power of God to heal any heart from catastrophic pain and suffering. She is an advocate of hard work and personal responsibility in all facets of life.

Timothy Ballard is the founder and CEO of Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.). He also serves as O.U.R.’s jump team commander for rescue operations. Ballard spent over a decade working as a special agent for the Department of Homeland Security assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and deployed as an undercover operative for the U.S. Child Sex Tourism Jump Team.

Ballard has been featured on many national news outlets to discuss his efforts combating child trafficking, including Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, The Meredith Vieira Show, CBS Nightly News, ABC Nightline, CNN Headline News, MSNBC, The Glenn Beck Program, and many local news shows. Ballard is the best-selling author of The Covenant: One Nation Under God and The Lincoln Hypothesis. He has taught American and international politics courses at Imperial Valley College, San Diego State University, and American Heritage School.

After serving a church mission to Chile, Ballard graduated cum laude with a BA in Spanish and political science from Brigham Young University. He graduated summa cum laude with an MA in international politics from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He lives in California with his wife and children.

Ed Smart is a child safety advocate and president of the Surviving Parents Coalition. He is an internationally recognized advocate for children’s safety with a focus on preventing abduction, bullying, abuse, and sexual assault. His advocacy began as a result of the abduction and return of his daughter Elizabeth from their Utah home in 2002. Ed, along with other children’s safety advocates, lobbied Congress and the Senate for passage of the National Amber Alert plan, the Adam Walsh Act, and the Protect our Children Act of 2008. He is working with other organizations on state felony arrestee DNA legislation.

He is currently program director of rehabilitation and prevention for Operation Underground Railroad.

Ed has a bachelors degree in finance from George Washington University and a masters degree in business administration, specializing in urban planning. The parents of six children, Ed and his wife, Lois, live in Salt Lake City.

Jerry Gowen is the chief operating officer (COO) at Operation Underground Railroad, responsible for development, IT, marketing, communications, donor relations, and partnerships.

Gowen earned a BA in public relations with a minor in business management at Brigham Young University in 1998 and was recognized as the outstanding graduating senior in communications. He earned an MBA at Washington State University in 2010 and was presented with the Chancellor’s Award for Student Achievement.

Gowen lives in Vancouver, Washington with his wife and six children. He is active in the community, supporting the Boy Scouts of America and local youth soccer programs.

Rebecca McHood Rebecca McHood is the founder of International Sexual Exploitation Enemies United (ISEEUHope) – an non-profit dedicated to activism, support and awareness of the sex trade and its damaging effects. Recent victories have included new massage parlor ordinances in the cities of Mesa and Gilbert Arizona. I SEE U Hope also provides support to those affected by the sexual addiction of a loved one.

Rebecca is a loyal friend and passionate defender of the value of individual journeys. An optimist, she is also a nature lover who appreciates change and believes that butterflies are personal signs of love from Jesus. She is the mother of two seven year old girls who fill her life with joy, laughter and insanity. She feels fortunate to be married to a humble, amazing, intelligent, easy-going, loving man who can fix almost anything and supports all of her wild ideas and interests.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary studies degree from Arizona State University where she graduated in 2006 Summa Cum Laude. Her studies focused on Anthropology and Political Science.

The Religious Brain

Presented by Dr. Michael Adam Ferguson

Moderated by Dr. Nicole Forsgren

Michael Ferguson is a research fellow for the Human Neuroscience Institute at Cornell University and a founding investigator of The Religious Brain Project. His neuro-medical research focuses on pattern analysis in the human brain. Using direct brain imaging, he is developing clinical markers for psychiatric diagnosis and care. He has a BS in biochemistry from Brigham Young University and a PhD in bioengineering from the University of Utah. He and his husband, J. Seth Anderson, were the first same-sex couple to be legally married by the State of Utah. They are the proud parents of two pet rats, Amber and Bernadette.

Nicole Forsgren holds a PhD in Management Information Systems with a minor in Cognitive Science. She studies the factors that influence people to use technology and the outcomes of that technology use, and is the Director of Organizational Performance and Analytics at Chef Software. Prior to joining Chef, she was a Professor at Utah State and Pepperdine Universities.

Moderator: Dan Wotherspoon is the former editor of Sunstone magazine and host of the Mormon Matters podcast.

Gina Colvin is lecturer at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, hosts the podcast A Thoughtful Faith and blogs at KiwiMormon.

Mitch Mayne is a national voice on Mormon LGBT issues, focusing especially on improving the health, mental health, and well-being of Mormon LGBT youth in the context of their faith. abstract

Ken Driggs, a criminal defense lawyer in Atlanta, has written extensively about Mormon and legal history topics, including several articles about Fundamentalist Mormons. He is the author of Evil Among Us: The Texas Mormon Missionary Murders.

Kalani Tonga is a lifelong member of the Church. She is an active Mormon single mother of five children who helped found the FEMWOC blog for Mormon women of color.

Fatimah S. Salleh earned a PhD in mass communication at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently earning a masters of divinity at Duke University.

Mormon Stand-Up Comedy

Featuring: Landon Bench, Chelsea Shields Strayer, Peter Kern, Amber Pechin, Mike Grover, David Christiansen

Landon Bench was born November 28, 1986 to Curt and Pat Bench. Landon was a chubby kid growing up, and garnered his first laughs due solely to his portly stature. Being fat wasn’t his only accomplishment though; he also won the Upland Terrace Elementary School Spelling Bee in the 5th and 6th grades. Several years and a few misdemeanor crimes later, Landon found solace in making people laugh, and not just because he was fat. Because he wasn’t fat anymore. Through the grace of God and a strict regimen of non-FDA approved weight-loss solutions, Landon lost over 70 pounds—the equivalent of a six year-old child, or a 15-year-old child from Zimbabwe. After the weight loss, he became physically active. Instead of going from the fridge to the couch in a Jazzy scooter, now he walks. Using that victory to fuel his desire, Landon decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy. He won some contest at Wise Guys comedy club and now does shows there sometimes, as well as private and corporate functions.

Chelsea Shields Strayer is a part-time comedian and a PhD candidate at Boston University in cultural and biological anthropology researching Asante indigenous healing rituals. She is also a Mormon feminist activist leading demonstrations, organizations, and lobbying efforts on behalf of religious gender equality. She is a TED Fellow and speaks regularly on evolution, religion, and gender. As president for Mormons for ERA, she works with the national ERA taskforce in Washington, D.C.

By night Amber Pechin hangs out in sketchy bars and comedy clubs in Phoenix, telling stories and feeding off her drug of choice- loud laughter. When she’s not doing stand-up she’s performing with an improv group. By day she dresses like a grown-up (when she has to) and is a public relations professional in order to afford her performance habit. She holds the belief PR is basically the same skill set as stand-up comedy, but generally with fewer penis jokes. On weekends you’ll find her anywhere but church and her favorite sin is seeking loud laughter… as far as anyone knows.

Peter Kern attended his first open mic in 2008. The show was limited to 20 comics and Peter was the 21st in line. Undaunted, he returned the next month, slightly earlier, took the stage and got his first modest laughs. Peter later auditioned for and became a member of Humor U, BYU’s Stand-up Comedy Club. He remained an active member of the club for three years, performing for thousands of students in nearly 100 shows. Peter is an original member of the professional touring stand-up comedy troupe, The Left Field and was featured on their first DVD, Live at the Wagner. In 2013, Peter applied for and received a grant from the De Florez Fund for Humor in order to teach stand-up comedy workshops at MIT, capping the week with a sold out show on campus featuring workshop participants and comedians from The Left Field. That same year, Peter competed in The World Series of Comedy, scoring well with the judges in Colorado Springs. Peter is on a lifelong journey of consuming all Superman media. He runs a small solo law practice in Orem, UT and might design a board game someday.

Mike Grover was recently featured on KSL TV’s “InDepth” for his stand up comedy and has done shows with comedians like Tim Meadows, Chris Hardwick, Hannibal Buress, Arj Barker, and Jimmy Pardo just to name a few. Though stand up is his first love, he also co-founded the improv troupe Logan Out Loud and has performed with several other improv groups.

David Christiansen became a standup comedian while at college in Utah. “I started out entertaining Mormons. They are like the Amish without the cool barns. It was tough, but it taught me I could write clean and still get laughs.” After several films and TV appearances Christiansen still prefers the live audience. “I love people coming up and saying, ‘That happened to me too!'”

2014 Theme–Bridges and Byways: Traversing the Mormon Landscape

Bridges are structures that span barriers and allow us to move between physical locations. Byways are secondary roads—the scenic routes that emphasize exploration and the journey. How can thinking about bridges and byways help us understand Mormon history, theology, and culture?

The need for bridges is often obvious: there’s a chasm, road, or waterway to cross. Metaphorically speaking, we can construct bridges of understanding that connect people and ideas. Where does it make sense to build new bridges? How much of our resources should we use to maintain aging bridges? When do we need to demolish outdated bridges? When do we reinforce or rebuild bridges that have become unsound? Is our intent to build permanent, lasting structures—or quick, temporary crossings?

Metaphorical byways suggest the pursuit of knowledge off the beaten (or correlated) path—the fascinating historical tidbits and obscure figures that enrich and deepen our understanding. Brigham Young once said “Mormonism includes all truth.” Byways can help us find new and divergent ways to create an interconnected system.

As the LDS Church evolved over nearly two centuries, which of its bridges and byways became mainstream thoroughfares? Which bridges deteriorated or fell into disuse? What new bridges and byways are being built as the LDS Church expands nationally and globally? What has changed about our thoroughfares since the early days of the Church? Which bridges have been built by Church headquarters and which have sprung up through grassroots efforts?

Early Saints watched bridges being burned behind them as they were driven from settlements in the Midwest. What effect did this persecution have on Mormons’ willingness to build or rebuild bridges with the outside world later on? How has modern Mormonism bridged the divide between itself and other New Religious movements; between the larger religious landscape in the US and the rest of the globe? Where has two-way traffic flowed smoothly on Mormonism’s bridges to the outside world and where have there been bottlenecks and collisions? When has tension arisen between those Saints who prefer well-traveled bridges and those who prefer the byways?

Finally, how has the information superhighway rerouted traffic? Certainly, Mormons are more connected than ever before; what are the benefits to these additional means of connectivity? And what costs are being exacted? Along our byways, where are the rest stops, the historical markers, the toll booths, the road closures, and the perpetual construction zones?

We especially encourage proposals that focus on this year’s theme: MORMON BODIES: LITERAL, METAPHORICAL, DOCTRINAL.
One of Mormonism’s most distinctive attributes is the emphasis on embodiment, which is not merely a condition of mortality but a crucial step in the journey to become like god, who “has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” (D&c 130:22). Bodies are a primary way we learn about the world, a source of pleasure and temptation, something to be both enjoyed and tamed. How do LDS ideas about sex, sin, illness, food, pleasure, procreation, disability, parenthood, gender, and godhood affect our experiences of our bodies? How do doctrines of embodiment affect the way Latter-day Saints think, feel, and discuss their bodies?

Jesus had a mortal body, but we don’t talk about its suffering, preferring to dwell on his resurrected form. Heavenly Mother has a body, but we are discouraged from talking about hers. The bodiless Holy Ghost is constantly making our bosoms burn, or calling tears to our eyes, or standing us up and walking us to the podium during testimony meeting.

What metaphors are hidden in our obsession with bodies? How does our bodily approach to the world both expand and constrain our view of the divine? What is the relationship between spirit and body (is it only the body that must be tamed)? What paradoxes does our view of bodies force us to live in?

Furthermore, the “body of Christ” is a metaphor for the Church, but Mormons avoid emphasizing the literal body of Christ. Why are some literal bodies more important than others? Which bodies matter most?

Mormonism also encompasses many different collective bodies: various traditions tracing their roots back to Joseph Smith, and various governing bodies overseeing different communities or texts or enterprises. Finally, in its relatively short history, Mormonism has produced a remarkably rich and diverse body of thought and scripture. How do all these Mormon bodies collide against, control, nurture, or support one another?

We also welcome reflections on other topics and their intersection with Mormonism, as well as studies of historical and contemporary events and figures, news in the Mormon world, online communities, theological explorations, and Mormon cultural studies.

Pre-registration has closed. You can register onsite starting at 8:00 am Saturday March 16 at the PSR Chapel lobby. After lunch, sessions and registration will move to the Seeley G. Mudd classroom building.

Sunstone West is in the San Francisco Bay Area March 15-17, 2013. Sunstone West sessions will be on the campus of the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. Overflow parking will be available at the Berkeley Institute, across the street from PSR.

We’re planning:

A potluck opening social at the Augustine home Friday March 15 at 7:30 pm, 1534 Julia Street, Berkeley CA. Bring goodies to share and visit with Sunstone folks before the main event.

Symposium sessions will be 8:30 am – 6:30 pm on Saturday March 16, 2013 at the Pacific School of Religion’s Chapel (morning plenary sessions) and in the Seeley G. Mudd classroom building (breakout sessions) in the afternoon. Onsite registration opens at 9:00 am and sessions will run between 9:10 am and 6:30 pm.

We invite Sunstone participants to attend church services on Sunday March 17, 2013 at the Berkeley Ward. The Berkeley Ward is located at 1501 Walnut (at the corner of Walnut and Vine) in Berkeley. There is a small parking lot and street parking–we strongly encourage attendees to carpool. Meetings begin at 9:30 am. The ward will be celebrating the Relief Society’s birthday in sacrament meeting.

From the north (I-80) or west (I-80):

Exit onto University Avenue and head east (toward the hills). Turn left (north) on Oxford Ave.; then turn right (east) onto Hearst Ave. Take the steep, oblique left onto Le Conte Ave., and drive uphill to the top of the bluff. The PSR campus is on your left. Continue towards the left onto Scenic Ave. to enter the PSR parking lot a half block downhill.

From the east (Hwy 24):

Take Telegraph Ave. exit and go north up Telegraph Ave. towards UC Berkeley campus. Turn left (west) onto Bancroft Ave.; turn right (north) onto Oxford Ave.; turn right (east) onto Hearst Ave. Take the steep, oblique left onto LeConte Ave., and drive uphill to the top of the bluff. By Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART): Take BART to the downtown Berkeley station (not the North Berkeley station). It’s a 15-minute walk to the PSR campus. On foot, proceed north on Shattuck Ave. from the station; turn right onto University Ave.; turn left onto Oxford Ave., right onto Hearst Ave.; then make an oblique left onto LeConte Ave. and walk uphill to the top of the bluff. The PSR campus is on your left.

By AC Transit bus: From the downtown Berkeley BART station, cross Shattuck Ave. to the bus stop at the corner of Shattuck and Center St. Take the #65 bus to the first bus stop on Euclid Ave. Walk one block west (towards the bay) along Le Conte Ave. to the PSR campus.

Parking on Campus

Campus police will be ticketing on weekdays, so please make sure you park in reserved Lot 24. On Saturday ONLY, parking in other campus parking lots is free (except the visitors lot).

Attendees who are staying at the University Guest House hotel can park free in the hotel’s parking lot. Non-guests can pay $5 per day for a parking permit and walk to the Union or ride the campus shuttle. A schedule for the shuttle can be found at http://www.commuterservices.utah.edu/transportation/shuttles/index.html. Look for the summer shuttle schedule.

LODGING on campus

A block of rooms has been reserved for Sunstone attendees at the University Guest House on the University of Utah campus. The rooms in the Sunstone block are $95/night (plus 12.6% tax) and have two queen beds, a refrigerator, microwave, complimentary wireless internet, hair dryer, coffee maker, iron, and ironing board.

A continental breakfast is available for hotel guests and there is a small convenience store; however, there is no restaurant on site. The Heritage Center, an all you can eat student dining hall, is a five minute walk from the hotel. Guests may pay at the door and meals cost $7.00 to $9.00.

Hotel parking is complimentary for guests. If you wish to park in the Guest House lot, parking passes are available for $5.00 per day.

Check-In time is 3:00 pm and Check-Out time: is 11:00 am.

MAKING RESERVATIONS

Individuals making their own HOTEL reservations should call 1-888-416-4075. Please mention the group name of Sunstone when making reservations.

Guests must book hotel rooms by the Monday, June 25, 2012 cut off date.

At the cut-off date, Hotel will release the unreserved rooms for general sale. Any reservations received after the cut-off date will be accepted on a space or rate available basis.

We are very sorry that we are unable to offer dorm room accommodations to Sunstone attendees. The University of Utah has no mechanism to make this type of lodging available to the public, and the financial and logistical aspects of doing it ourselves proved too burdensome for the Sunstone staff.

A block of rooms is also available at the SLC Marriott University Park (480 Wakara Way). Rates are $99 a night plus tax for all rooms. Guests must book before Wednesday 11 July 2012 to receive the preferred rate in the Sunstone block.

Sunstone Lecture December 11, 2011: Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

“Stirring up LDS History”
Relief Society sisters now have a new resource—a compact history of the Relief Society called Daughters of My Kingdom. The new manual, which is to be used from time to time for lessons given the first Sunday of each month, is not only unusual for its focus on women but for its chronological organization. Most Church manuals are organized thematically, offering little scope for discussing change over time. Despite its uplifting narrative, this manual may require a new set of skills. As teachers of women’s history know, you can’t just “add women and stir.”
This event was held at the Gould Auditorium at the J. Willard Marriott Library on the University of Utah campus, 295 S 1500 East, Salt Lake City and was co-sponsored by the Marriott Library.

Due to a scheduling conflict with our long-time venue in Salt Lake, the 2011 August symposium is moving to the Weber State University campus in Ogden, UT. All symposium sessions and workshops will be in the Shepherd Union building at WSU.
We regret the inconvenience this change of venue will cause and are doing everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible for you.
Meeting on a university campus makes many amenities available to you that we could not otherwise offer–including half day child care, the Union food court, grill, and convenience store, Starbucks, meals from top-notch campus catering, the on-site WSU Bookstore, inexpensive dorm accommodations, and comprehensive AV equipment and technical support in every meeting room.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
We have arranged to have a block of discounted hotel rooms at the Ben Lomond Suites Historic Hotel in downtown Ogden to provide accommodations for Symposium attendees.
Rates are $87/night (single), $94/night (triple) and $101/night (quad), plus tax and includes complimentary breakfast.
The guest rooms in our block have either one King or two Queen sized beds and are equipped with microwave, mini fridge, hairdryer, and coffee maker. There is complimentary high speed wireless Internet throughout the hotel.

WSU HOUSING

Guests can book single occupancy dorm rooms for $22/night and double occupancy dorm rooms for $38/night. Promontory Tower facilities have shared/community bathrooms (bed linens+towels provided).
Apartment-style housing is available at University Village, located three blocks south of the main campus. Suites have four bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and living room. Pricing is $28 per night, per bedroom with a shared bath. Rates include bed linens and towels.
The cut off to book WSU housing is Wednesday July 27, 2011.

ONSITE CHILD CARE AT WSU
We’ve arranged to have WSU provide half-day onsite child care for children ages 2-9 at the Symposium during the afternoon sessions (2:00-6:00 pm). There are a limited number of slots open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Child care is available by reservation through WSU’s online system:

There is no charge for children enrolled in child care; however, WSU requires parents to complete a registration packet for each child in advance with emergency contact numbers, health and immunization history, and physician contact information. Register online for childcare and the packet will be emailed to you to fill out and return.
PARKING INFORMATION
Parking for Symposium attendees is available free of charge in lot A2 on weekdays and weekends (north of the Student Union) and in lot A10 on Saturday only. The closest handicapped parking is in the parking lot (PPL) just south of the Student Union; there is no charge for parking if your vehicle has state-issued handicapped tags or placards. Please see the campus map on page 39 of the Preliminary Program for parking lot and building locations.

TRANSPORTATION
We are working out the details for a WSU shuttle to provide service between downtown Ogden/25th Street hotels, the FrontRunner station, and WSU campus during peak times/meal breaks on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the Symposium.
SLC AIRPORT/OGDEN and OGDEN/SLC AIRPORT
If you need transportation between Salt Lake International Airport and Ogden UT–especially on Sunday when there is no public transportation running–we’ve made arrangements with a local shuttle company to provide transportation service August 3-7, 2011.
To make a reservation on a shared shuttle, contact CITY EXPRESS TRANSPORTATION at 1-866-385-2489, visit their website, www.airportexpressutah.com, to fill out and submit a reservation form online, or contact the City Express manager, amir@cityexpresstransportation.com .
The cost is $45 per person each direction on a shared shuttle. NOTE: Shuttle reservations MUST be made AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE. Otherwise the $45 negotiated price will not apply.
Shuttle bus service between Salt Lake City and WSU is proving to be quite costly. Since there are several public transportation options available weekdays, including FrontRunner commuter train service and UTA express buses, we encourage symposium attendees to use public transit.

Plan to participate in the fourth annual Restoration Studies & Sunstone Midwest Symposium in Independence, Missouri, at the Graceland University Independence Campus on April 15-16, 2011.
We will explore the theme: “A Woman’s Place…” Ideas, Impacts, and Experiences of Restoration Women. Women make up half or more than half the membership of churches, but their roles and impacts have sometimes been undervalued and underappreciated. This year, we hope you will help us consider how women have shaped the church, from theological thought and ideas to practices and the lived church experience. How have women impacted the Restoration and Christianity in general, and the Community of Christ and LDS Church in particular?

This year’s Sunstone Northwest will be at the MulvannyG2 architecture firm, located at
1110 112th Avenue NE, Suite 500 Bellevue, WA.
There will be signs directing attendees from the adjacent parking structure to the 5th floor offices where the NW Symposium will be. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
NOTE: Sunstone was NOT able to negotiate a discount at the parking structure adjacent to MulvannyG2. Parking is $7 for the day. To offset this cost, we will NOT be increasing on site registration prices.
On site registration will be $30 for the full day and $10 for students. Morning and afternoon passes and single session tickets will also be available at the door. Box lunches need to be ordered in advance through the pre-registration link below.

We’re also planning a Sunday evening Sunstone event in Portland. NOTE the change of venue to the FELT’S home (2115 SW 78th Ave, Portland, OR 97225). Sunday night’s speakers are Devery Anderson speaking on his documentary history of temple worship and John Kesler speaking on meditation for Mormons.
We are not charging admission for the Portland event, but would appreciate a $5 donation per person to help cover travel expenses for the speakers.
