TWENTY YEARS OF THE SUNSTONE SYMPOSIUM: SUPPORT GROUP OR THEOLOGICAL DISCUSSION? Since 1979, the Sunstone symposium has provided a forum for the discussion of theology, history, and the experience of Mormonism. From its initial emphasis on theology, the symposium has expanded to feature virtually every aspect of Mormonism, from family life and sexuality to the missionary program to art. The symposium warranted an official warning from the Church about participation. Still, the symposium continues to provide an independent arena for the careful and energetic examination of our religious tradition.
